Wastewater of cities and settlements represent a substrate for the growth and multiplication of large numbers of microorganisms, because they contain compounds with carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus, thus enabling implementation of a series of biochemical reactions. The main objective of this study was to remove nitrogen compounds by the process of nitrification and denitrification in municipal wastewater, and meet the requirements for wastewater quality in accordance with the current legislation. In this study, activated sludge from the treatment of wastewater was used. In the activated sludge, by the technique of accumulation of nitrificants and denitrificants, mixed microbial cultures were prepared which showed the ability of nitrification ammonia to nitrate, and the ability of denitrification of nitrate nitrogen to gaseous nitrogen. In the study, municipal wastewater was used in which the initial concentration of ammonia was 150 mg/L. At the end of the process, compounds with nitrogen were completely removed from municipal wastewater. The concentration of organic compounds, expressed as COD, was 289 mg/L in the initial phase, while in the final stage was 51 mg/L.
