ANALYSIS OF RESIDUAL REACTANTS FROM SYNTHESIZED POLY(ACRYLIC ACID-co-METHACRYLIC ACID)

Acrylic acid is used as ion exchangers, adhesives, surface protective equipment in dentistry, for making soft contact lenses. Methacrylic acid is used in a variety of materials in order to improve hydrophilicity, sorption, and other mucoadhesive properties. The aim of this study was to synthesize copolymer of acrylic and methacrylic acid with varied content of N,N'-methylenebisacrylamide as cross-linker. Synthesized poly(acrylic acid-co-methacrylic acid), p(AA-MA), hydrogels were treated with acetonitrile to remove the unreacted residual monomer and crosslinker. The content of the residual reactants is determined by using HPLC method. In order to characterize obtained hydrogels differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) was applied. DSC thermogram of xerogel p(AA-MA) shows three endothermic peaks at 91.17 °C due to removal of the physically bound water, at 220.63 °C with a shoulder at 222.20 °C and 282.58 °C which are the results of thermal degradation of acrylic acid and methacrylic acid. The residual reactants values are in the range 0.066-1.133 mg/g of acrylic acid, 0.054-1.391 mg/g of methacrylic acid, and 0.068-0.884 mg/g of N,N'-methylenebisacrylamide, calculated on the amount of synthesized p(AA-MA) xerogel. The residual monomer content confirms the high yield of the synthesis and their applicability as the adsorbent and the drug carriers.
