OVERVIEW OF HYDATIDOSES DURING 2014 – 2015

1. Valbona Gjoni, Institute of Public Health, Tirane, ALBANIA, Albania

Introduction: Cystic Echinococcosis (CE) this neglected iceberg disease, is one of the most widespread zoonose that in endemic regions, represents a human incidence higher than 50/100.000 person-year and the global prevalence at 2-3 millions cases with 200.000 new cases diagnosed annually. Cases from imaging techniques, different assays and surgeon treatment, are only a small part visualized. Other invisible part is: health and socio-economic consequences of the affected patients. Aim was to reinstate CE on the radar of health policy makers, provide new insights into the host-parasite, relationship and epidemiology and improve the related databases of National Health System, too.
Methods: The epidemiologic data were collected from the individual case-report schedule. During 2014-2015 periods, were analyzed 171 patients suspected by ultrasound, CT/RMI and surgery established in serological findings for anti-Echinococcus antibodies.
Conclusions: Hydatidose is widespread in different regions of Albania. Infestation rate related to gender was 57.1% female/42.8% male. The number of cases has increased in recent years to ± 22 patients/year, comparing with earlier 2006 period (±14). About 44.1 % of these patients underwent surgery as treatment and follow-up patients were 57 % of cases. No reported data of lethality. Echinococcose may affect every active age-group population caused by environment contamination.
