Green living systems, especially vegetated roofs, are becoming more present in urban and architectural design as a tool for city greening. As an important part of the building envelope, they can provide many environmental, aesthetic and health benefits. Reasons for green living roof implementation differs based on the desired service. For many cities dealing with sewer overflow problems, stormwater runoff reduction, often by 50% or more relative to impervious surfaces, is a crucial service. Nevertheless, green roofs’ influence on stormwater quality must also be investigated as an important environmental aspect. The direct factors, plant species, substrate and structure of the green roof system, and indirect factors such as irrigation, fertilizer, and age of the roof could determine whether vegetated roofs will behave as sink or source of chemical substances in a runoff. Runoff pollutants include metals (Zn, Pb, Cd, Fe, Mn, Cr, Cu, Ca…), and nutrients (N, NO3-N, NH4-N, P, PO4-P, K, DOC…). This paper reviews current knowledge, based on literature, regarding the role of green roofs on runoff water quality improvement.
