Biodiesel, an excellent alternative to petroleum diesel, is composed of methyl esters of long-chain fatty acids derived from vegetable oils or animal fats. In order to study solid base catalyst for biodiesel production, transesterification of commercial edible sunflower oil with methanol was carried out in the presence of CaO–SiO2 composite materials.
Mechanochemical treatment followed by calcination, as a solvent-free method, was chosen for the synthesis of calcium silicates with different Ca/Si ratios. Prepared catalysts were characterized by XRD, FTIR, BET N2 adsorption/desorption isotherms, Hammett indicator for basic strength and volumetric analysis for free CaO content.
All the catalytic experiments were carried out in 250 mL three-necked thermostated glass flask with a condenser and magnetic stirrer at 60 oC and 1 bar, with the molar ratio of methanol to sunflower oil of 10:1 and with 2 wt% of catalyst based on oil weight. Effect of free CaO content on the biodiesel yield was also investigated.
