Building and System Energy Performance Simulation: A Single Family House

Thermal conditioning of buildings represents a significant energy consumer. With the forthcoming regulations and legislations, drafted by the Government of Republika Srpska, the significance of energy efficiency in buildings is increasing. Considerable energy savings can be achieved both on the building construction side (envelope materials, orientation, shading, etc.) and on the thermal energy generation side (utilization of efficient generation equipment, thermal storage and system control strategies).
The weather conditions a building is exposed to, at almost any location, are highly non-stationary. The heating demand of an object depends on these conditions, such as ambient temperature, humidity and solar radiation. Therefore, the heating demand profile of a building is also non-stationary. Using building energy performance (BEP) simulation it is possible to assess the energy performance of buildings and their heating systems in time domain.
In order to demonstrate the capabilities and advantages of BEP simulation, a thermal simulation of a single family house located near Banja Luka and its heating system has been performed. The simulation results have been validated using the conventional calculation procedure on annual level. Afterwards the advantages of simulation approach are presented, such as hourly assessment of boiler efficiency, consumption and emissions.
Further advantages of BEP simulation are the time domain assessment of the thermal storage, solar thermal collector and/or photovoltaic panel performance. The simulation is also used to improve system performance control and to optimize the component sizes (e.g. boiler, storage and solar collectors).
