Nowadays, 3D models of standard parts and components are widely used
in design and development of new products. Manufacturers offer 3D models of
standard parts and components on their websites. Usually these 3D models are not
available 'in cache' due to large numberof variants. 3D models are generated
automatically after a user (client) selects a combination of offered parameters and
options. Macros and application programming interfaces (API) embedded in
commercial CAD/CAM systems are mainly used for this purpose. It is shown that CAD
models generated in such a way have manydisadvantages. These disadvantages are
the result of using only basic functions of application programming interface. Better
output requires extensive programming experience and a deeper knowledge of API
interface. This paper analyzes the possibility of developing an application that will
enable better and more reliable 3D models of standard parts and products, using
advanced API functions.
