Cystoid macular edema is accumulation of the liquid in microcystic intraretinal rooms. It occurs as a result of increased permeability of blood- ocular barrier. Causes of macular edema are different, but the most common are: disorders in blood vessels in retina (diabetes mellitus, occlusion of the central retinal vein), pigmentary retinal dystrophy, tractional, inflammatory- as complication of uveitis, postsurgical, iatrogenic.
To show effectiveness of the treatment of macular edema with different causes under conditions in our clinic
Standardized ophthalmologic examination- assessment of the best corrected visual acuity, measuring intraocular pressure, biomicroscopy of the eye and examination of the eye fundus in mydriasis with magnifying glass, optical coherent tomography, and sometimes even fluorescein angiography. We use optical coherent tomography- because the method is quick and noninvasive- in diagnosing and following up the macular edema during treatment. During the treatment we used Ranibizumab and Aflibercept- intravitreal injections that contained inhibitors of the endothelial growth factor, Ar- LFC, inhibitors of carboanhydrase, corticosteroids,cytostatics.
We estimate the effectiveness of the treatment by following the visual acuity (Snellen chart), doing the complete ophthalmological examination, and measuring the thickness of the macular region and serial screening of macula ( parallel lines) with optical coherent tomography. The advantage of this method is the is better efficiency in ocular tissues and less side- effects.
The success of the treatment depends on the cause of macular edema and the moment of therapeutic approach.
