Ambalage is a protective envelope that covers a product, in order to reduce the possibility of damage during transport and extend the lifetime. In addition to the positive impact on the sustainability of packaged products, used and discarded ambalage can be a significant environmental problem. In recent years, there has been a trend in the development of biodegradable packaging that can satisfy all the needs of products to preserve its quality while reducing environmental pollution. Polymeric ambalage has led to significant shifts in the industry, but has also brought some negative consequences with it, and therefore the use of biopolymers is considered one of the best ways to reduce the negative impact of packaging waste on the environment. Synthetic polymers of a longer lifetime have directed science's attention to the development of biodegradable polymers and, consequently, biopolymers produced from natural materials, and thus behave when they come to nature as waste. This paper presents the advantages and some possibilities of applying biopolymer materials in food industry.
