Multiple layers of alkyd resin based coatings were investigated for corrosion resistance of steel. Used steel samples were made of (wt.%): 99.565 Fe; 0.135 Mn; 0.084 Os; 0.062 Ir; 0.052 Cu; 0.037 Cr; 0.0028 Zn; 0.024 V; 0.01 Sr. The steel samples were prepared with grind paper and degreased in 96% ethanol. Commercial paints were used for deposition of coatings: based color for metal - oxy red 3701 and for final coating - enamel varnish blue 6611. The paint was deposited on steel samples with paintbrush in different combination of based and final paints. Steel samples were protected by following combination: sample 1 (1x based paint), sample 2 (1x based paint + 1x final paint), sample 3 (1x based paint + 2x final paint), sample 4 (2x based paint + 1x final paint), sample 5 (2x based paint + 2x final paint). Morphology of all obtained organic coatings was determined by Leica EZ4 HD optical microscope at 100x magnification. The morphology of the coatings was obtained prior and after immersion in 5% NaCl solution for 21 days. The corrosion stability of the samples was determined by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and by determined corrosion current and corrosion potential by extrapolation of Tafel plots. The morphology of some coatings was not compact, and several defects were observed. All samples had different corrosion stability before and after immersion in corrosion solution. With increase of number of layers, i.e. by increase of coatings thickness the corrosion stability is increased; which is confirmed by results of electrochemical tests (electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and Tafel polarization plots).
