With a strong industrial base in its mixed economy, Bulgaria’s productivity on average is still two to three times lower than the EU. Research and development in mechatronics and smart technologies, especially promoting automation, digitalization, and innovative manufacturing processes can enhance Bulgaria's industrial competitiveness and more efficient production of high-quality products. In order to be aligned with EU’s policy frameworks of energy efficiency and sustainability, research in energy-saving technologies is of high importance, leading to reduced energy costs for businesses and households, improved competitiveness, and lower carbon emissions. Center of Competence “Smart Mechatronic, Eco- and Energy-Saving Systems and Technologies” (CoC SMEEST) project with the Technical University of Gabrovo (TU-Gabrovo) acting as the leading institution and principal coordinator represents the logical result for building on the research infrastructure, expertise and results. In the Center of Competence development period, TU-Gabrovo guided the transition of SMEEST towards a sustainable, internationally connected and industry-oriented research and innovation organisation. The Center of Competence promotes collaboration among research teams, industry partners, and the broader community while ensuring the center's success in the field of smart mechatronics, eco- and energy-saving systems, and technologies. In addition to national partnerships, the CoC has established many international partnerships, including with the University of Niš in Serbia and technical universities in the Czech Republic and Turkey. CoC SMEEST forms the foundation of the research infrastructure at the Tech Park of the Technical University of Gabrovo, which is a partner of the Science and Technology Park Niš. Together, they are co-founders of the Alliance of Science and Technology Parks and Innovative Ecosystems in South East Europe. In this paper the main objectives of the project are presented with the aim of accelerating eco- and energy saving technologies for improving industrial competitiveness and efficient high-quality production, while innovations developed by CoC contribute to the EU's transition to a greener economy and enhance the global response to climate change.
