Biomaterials for Regenerative Medicine and Wound Healing: Current Perspectives and Novel Strategies

Abstract: Regenerative medicine relies heavily on the development of advanced biomaterials engineered to restore and improve damaged tissue functions. Overcoming the challenges of tissue regeneration requires a highly multidisciplinary approach that spans material design, advanced manufacturing, and rigorous biological evaluation. This plenary lecture presents an overview of recent achievements from our research projects, focusing on the design, characterization, and application of diverse biomaterials tailored for both hard and soft tissue repair. A significant part of the presentation will highlight results from our ongoing CHRONOWOUND project, which addresses the complex challenges of chronic wound healing. Within this framework, we showcase advanced pharmaceutical formulations—such as bioactive-loaded hydrogels and collagen-based matrices—engineered to exert antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and immunomodulatory effects while accelerating tissue regeneration. To further personalize wound management, this project integrates additive manufacturing (3D printing) with machine learning models to fabricate patient-specific dressings based on individual wound geometries. Finally, drawing from our extensive experience in biomaterial testing, the lecture will discuss the critical role of preclinical evaluation. We will share insights into various in vitro cellular systems and in vivo animal models used in our research to assess biocompatibility and biofunctionality prior to clinical translation, evaluating their respective advantages and limitations. Ultimately, this presentation illustrates how combining novel biomaterials design with advanced technology and robust testing models drives the future of regenerative therapies.
