The presented work is the result of the research of samples in the forensic analysis of a real event. The material examined by the method of scanning electron microscopy with an energy dispersive x-ray spectrometer (SEM/EDS) was a polymer coating on fabric. The chemical elements carbon, oxygen and traces of the chemical elements silicon and calcium were detected on the examined samples, while aluminum was not detected. The determined microelemental composition of the surface polymer coating indicated that it is most likely silicone resin (polysiloxane) used for the production of water-repellent (DWR) coatings on sports clothing. The presence of calcium indicated that the coating was either enhanced with mineral additives (eg calcium carbonate) for strength or that the chemical element calcium was most likely a contaminant. Also, an analysis of the surface layers of the fibers was performed. The form of the investigated fibers indicated that they are natural, cotton fibers. Monochromatic images were also obtained on which their individual characteristics could be observed. All obtained results integrally contributed to the realistic picture of the event.
