CONDITION OF COPPICE BEECH FORESTS IN THE REPUBLIC OF SRPSKA AND MANAGEMENT METHODS – Case study in the Lopare area

1. Zoran Govedar, Faculty of Forestry, University of Banja Luka, Republic of Srpska, Bosnia and Herzegovina

The total area of forest stock (area of forests and forest land) in the Republic of Srpska is 1,338,489 ha or 54.4% of the total area of the Republic of Srpska. Coppice forests account for 421,125 hectares or 31.4%. The largest areas are occupied by beeches (126,252 ha) and oaks (124,069 hectares), while other mixed forests occupy 170,804 hectares. In the previous management, these forests were not given adequate attention and were most often left to spontaneous natural development. This was reflected in the quality of of these forests, as well as the varying degrees of habitat degradation. Depending on the degree of degradation of stands and habitats, they are divided into three categories: high-quality coppice stands in a good and preserved habitat, poor-quality scion stands in a good and preserved habitat and poor-quality scion stands in a poor and deforested habitat. Depending on the categorization, the breeding measures of the conversion of forests into a high silvicultural form are defined on the example of outcrop beech forests in the area of Lopare.
In the research, permanent sample surfaces were set up and data were collected using common dendrometric methods. For the analysis and determination of the volume of stands, tables of taxation elements for beech in the territory of Bosnia and Herzegovina were used. In addition to descriptive statistics, the method of statistical testing was applied in order to determine the significance of differences for the basic elements of the structural structure of stands. The obtained results show that, depending on the degree of degradation, breeding measures of direct and indirect conversion to high cultivation form should be carried out in order to improve the quality and productivity of stands.
