Background:The definition of falls dynamics is quite complex and studies on the descent and the impact phase of falls have lack place insufficient in the literature. Despite the lack of subject, many hypotheses have been presented over the years using simulations. The outcome of a fall is affected by its energy during the descent, the individual's orientation, and efforts to protect himself.
Aim:To collect and synthetize published evidence concerning fall dynamics of older adults in healthcare settings.
Methods: this scoping review, electronic databases, including MEDLINE (Pubmed), CINAHL and Google Scholar were searched between on July 2021 and September 2021.In the study searching process the inclusion criterias were followed: Including adults and elderly who are admitted to healthcare settings, published between 1990 and 2021.Consensus was reached to include the eligible studies in this study.
Results: In total,1943 studies were searched, and 12 studies met the inclusion criterias. 10 of 12 studies reported on fall direction,11 of protective responses, three of duration and velocity, and ten of distribution of energy through the impact of various parts of the body. The video records of falls were performed by digital video cameras in nine studies, FallCam cameras in one, and a depth sensor system which attached to participant’s waist in one. The most common fall directions determined backwards, and the most protective response was stepping and rotation of the body, respectively. Pelvis/torso/buttocks was the site with the greatest energy absorption and with the greatest injury risk. In addition, fall direction, impact sites and protective responses were correlated to the occurrence of severe injuries or fractures.
Conclusions: The findings of this scoping review showed that the dynamics of accidental falls might be effective on falls outcomes positively or negatively.In this case, studies which are for future prevention programs and the creation of safer places are called to next studies.
