Industrial waste management has become one of the major challenges of contemporary environmental protection systems due to its significant impacts on soil, water, air quality, and public health. This study examines the economic and environmental dimensions of waste management through a case study of the Meteris landfill located in Vranje, Serbia. The research is based on the analysis of operational documentation, statistical records of disposed waste covering the period from 2018 to 2023, and the relevant legislative and institutional framework governing waste management. Particular attention is given to identifying the principal challenges associated with industrial waste management, including limited waste separation and treatment capacities, insufficient implementation of circular economy principles, and inadequate institutional coordination among stakeholders. The findings indicate that although certain improvements have been achieved in landfill operation and waste handling practices, landfilling remains the dominant disposal method, while recycling and material recovery rates remain relatively low. The study emphasizes the necessity of modernizing waste management systems through investments in recycling infrastructure, advanced waste treatment technologies, continuous environmental monitoring, and stronger enforcement of environmental regulations. The proposed measures could significantly reduce environmental risks, improve resource efficiency, and support the transition toward sustainable waste management practices consistent with the principles of the circular economy.
