Abstract: Distributed electrical system in every modern vehicle consist of many ECU (Electronic Control Units) connected via communication buses. The most popular bus in automotive systems is CAN bus (Control Area Network). When fault occurs on the bus, large-scale problems appear in the whole distributed system.
This paper discuss impact of hardware fault on CAN bus on vehicle distributed electrical system. In case when fault occur on communication bus, a lot of ECU's can detect this fault and many different problems in vehicle may appear. Every different hardware fault (e.g. short circuit, open circuit etc.) have specific consequences to vehicle electrical system. The aim of this study is to assess the impact of all hardware faults which can appear on communication bus. It's very interesting to observe number of ECU which detect certain fault and number of faults per ECU. When fault occurs, it's necessary to read values from all ECU's via relevant diagnosis protocols and standard diagnostic interface (ISO-9141, J1850, ISO 14230 - KWP 2000 or ISO 14229 - UDS). The study results are based on experimental data obtained by conducting experiments on vehicle Volkswagen Touran, Model Year 2006.
