MAGNETIC PROPERTIES OF CUBE-LIKE AND ROUNDED NEMATITE NANOPARTICLES SYNTHESIZED BY HYDROTHERMAL SYNTHESIS METHOD

1. Ivana Jankovic, Vojna akademija, Serbia

In this study hematite nanoparticles (α-Fe2O3) of cube-like and rounded shape were synthesized via hydrothermal synthesis method by varying ethanol/water ratios. Particle shape directly influences physicochemical properties, magnetic behavior, and optical properties. The morphology and particle sizes of the synthesized samples were observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The magnetic properties of the hematite nanoparticles were investigated across a broad temperature range (50–300 K) and under various applied magnetic fields (up to 3 T) utilizing a vibrating-sample magnetometer. Cube-like hematite nanoparticles display ultra-low coercivity (HC = 21 Oe) due to defect-minimized planar surfaces, whereas rounded hematite nanoparticles exhibit higher coercivity (HC = 306 Oe) due to defect-rich curved surfaces and atomic misalignments. Understanding the shape-dependent magnetic properties of hematite (α-Fe2O3) nanoparticles is essential for advancing their biomedical and nanotechnological applications. With low cytotoxicity and high biocompatibility, the synthesized hematite nanoparticles show promise for magnetic nanodevice development and biomedical applications.
