Cardan transmissions are used for transmission of the power and torque between individual car drivelines with gaps, not rigidly connected to each other or whose shaft axes do not match, or the relative position of the individual sets tends to vary. In a classic drive (rear axle wheels are driven by a engine at the front), under the influence of uneven ground, the rear transmission is constantly changing its position in regard to the output shaft of the gear shift (the front of the car). In this case, the cardan transmission consists of two cardan joints and a cardan shaft. Due to a flexion, the cardan shaft’s length changes. Therefore, the cardan shaft must be connected to a cardan joint by means of a shaft with grooves or any elastic element, so that the shaft may extend in the direction of its axis, but still fully transmits the torque. During the exploitation of the elements of the cardan joint, damage occurs. Therefore, the examination of the microstructure as well as the application of machine vision to analyze the microstructure of damaged mechanical parts is essential to determine the cause and reduce the damage of the observed parts of the cardan joint.
