Radon in public kindergartens in Montenego

Radon was continuously measured over a 9-month period (September–June) in 434 ground-floor rooms of all 69 public kindergartens in Montenegro, using passive Radosys RSFV detectors. Radon activity concentrations in the rooms ranged from 3 to 1583 Bq/m³ (AM = 202 Bq/m³, Med = 133 Bq/m³), while the average radon concentrations at the ground-floor level of the kindergartens ranged from 24 to 1229 Bq/m³ (AM = 216 Bq/m³, Med = 148 Bq/m³).
The Shapiro–Wilk test rejects the hypothesis of a log-normal distribution of radon concentrations in individual rooms, but also indicates that the average radon concentrations at the ground-floor level of the 69 kindergarten buildings do not significantly deviate from a log-normal distribution (p > α = 0.05).
Fourteen of the 69 kindergartens (20.3%) had average ground-floor radon concentrations above 300 Bq/m³. At least one ground-floor room with a radon concentration above 300 Bq/m³ was found in 25 kindergartens (36.2%), while 4 kindergartens (5.8%) had at least one room with a radon concentration above 1000 Bq/m³. In total, 91 ground-floor rooms (21%) had radon concentrations above 300 Bq/m³.
The most critical situation was found in one kindergarten in the capital city, where radon concentrations in all six ground-floor rooms ranged from 424 to 1583 Bq/m³. For employees working in this kindergarten, the annual effective dose due to radon inhalation is estimated to range from 2.7 to 10.0 mSv according to UNSCEAR, and from 5.0 to 18.7 mSv according to ICRP.
