The paper analyzes orthodontic anomalies indicating different variations in the appearance of the jaw and the position of the teeth and their mutual relations. The causes of orthodontic anomalies are various: genetics, bad habits (pacifier or thumb sucking, mouth breathing), and diseases and injuries. The consequences of this are an irregular bite, increased tooth wear, difficulty maintaining oral hygiene and a greater tendency of caries, problems with the masticatory muscles and the jaw joint, and poor smile aesthetics.
The most common orthodontic anomalies are compression (teeth crowding), overbite, open bite and progeny complex of anomalies.
Orthodontic therapy very rarely begins in the deciduous dentation, i.e. in children younger than 7 years. The best time to start therapy is at age of 9 - 10 years, i.e. when the baby teeth are replaced with permanent teeth. The most common start of therapy is with mobile orthodontic appliances which are also placed on permanent teeth if necessary.
