Introduction: Aside from its benefits, orthodontic treatment could cause risks and complications. Periodontal complications are one of the most common risks.
Aim: The aim of this study was to investigate the periodontal status during orthodontic treatment with fixed appliances.
Method: The sample for this study consisted of 50 male and female patients, during orthodontic treatment with fixed appliances, mean age 17 years, with completed second dentition and no systemic diseases. The data about stage and duration of orthodontic treatment, oral hygiene habits and brushing technique, along with the history of periodontal disease, risk factors for periodontal diseases, and systemic disease presence, were collected through a questionnaire for every patient. The following clinical parameters were measured: gingival thickness, width of attached gingiva, gingival recession, plaque index (PI) and gingival index (GI).
Results: Measurements established that 80% of patients had GI=1.1-3.0, 75% of patients had PI≥1. There is no significant effect of width of attached gingiva, gingival thickness and duration of fixed orthodontic appliance on the increase of periodontal indices. 82,5% use an incorrect brushing technique. There are no gingival recessions evaluated.
Conclusion: Treatment with fixed appliances may increase the values of periodontal indices and make brushing difficult, but without effect on appearance of gingival recession.
