This topic will focus on the application of different photocatalytic materials for the degradation of organic pollutants under environmentally relevant conditions. Particular attention will be devoted to the transition from semiconductor powders to immobilized and reusable systems. Photocatalysts, such as TiO2 and ZnO, have demonstrated significant potential for the treatment of contaminated water. However, TiO2 and ZnO are usually applied in powder form, which makes their separation and recovery after treatment challenging, potentially contributing to additional costs and secondary contamination. Immobilization on suitable supports represents a promising strategy for improving catalyst handling, stability, and reusability. This study involves synthesis and characterization of semiconductor-based photocatalytic materials, as well as their application in water purification. Different approaches to catalyst immobilization and reuse will be discussed. Furthermore, the advantages and limitations of suspended and supported systems will be illustrated through selected examples of dye degradation. Overall, the presented results indicate that the future development of photocatalytic water treatment should be directed toward stable, recoverable, and reusable materials capable of maintaining high pollutant degradation efficiency over multiple treatment cycles.
