The Working Group for energy and pollution GRPE UN / ECE Group of Experts adopted the draft protocol PMP and brought in ECE Regulation 83 additional method of measuring particle emissions for light duty diesel engines. This methodology has been experimentally verified and it was examined for particle number-PN; thus for engines with and without diesel particulate filters- DPF, as well for gasoline engines with direct injection. Based on these experiences it had been given recommendations for particulate number PN limits, and for PM particle mass for light duty diesel engines defined by their mass. The next step is the development of methodology for measuring particulate emissions of heavy duty diesel engines. So far, the measurement methodology is defined and it is shown that the proposed new method that has entered and the ECE Regulations 49 based under this methodology. At the beginning the goal was to find reproducibility and repeatability by measuring particulate emissions both for PM and PN of heavy duty diesel engines in several international research laboratories and manufactures of heavy diesel engines. The paper presents the novel experiences based on a new methodology that is primarily related to the measurement of particle number (i.e. particle concentration) emission from heavy duty engines.
