Outdoor activities or work at low temperatures (freezers, construction sites, food processing plants, mining) expose the human body to the risk of frostbite. Hand function is particularly impaired when skin temperature decreases, as handiness and the ability to handle materials are reduced. Maintaining stable hand temperature can facilitate working conditions and improve thermophysiological comfort. This study investigated the effect of treating textile materials with Aronia arbutifolia L. extract and phase change materials (PCM) on the antibacterial properties and thermophysiological comfort of gloves designed for cold climates. Sodium sulfate decahydrate was used as PCM. Prototypes of glove liners were developed using futer knitted fabric, with a smooth outer surface and an inner layer formed of knitted loops providing a softer and warmer texture. PCM and A. arbutifolia L. extract in the form of an alginate paste were applied to the knitted fabric by screen printing. The antibacterial activity of the printed fabric was confirmed by the agar diffusion method against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. Thermophysiological properties of glove liners were defined by testing air permeability and thermal characteristics (thermal resistance and thermal conductivity coefficient), as well as by evaluating physiological parameters of subjects during wear trials. Measurements of skin temperature and relative humidity using MSR devices demonstrated that the incorporation of PCMs into glove design contributes to improved thermal regulation under cold conditions.
