EFFICIENCY OF DIFFERENT METHODS ON DETECTION OF Giardia duodenalis

1. Erjona Abazaj, Institute of Public Health, Tirane, ALBANIA, Albania

Giardia duodenalis is the major species found in mammals, and the only species known to cause illness in humans that occurs worldwide, and is particularly common in warm climates. The aim of this study was to compare different methods for detection of pathogenic protozoan G duodenalis in stool samples. Over one year (September 2013-August 2014) we have examined 115 patients hospitalized in hospital with problems in gastrointestinal tract. Stool samples were examined using classic microscopy examination and antigen detection ELISA methods. SPSS version 19 was used for calculation of data. The average year was 6.66 and the minimum age was 3 months old and maximum 15 years old. Based to the data 53.04% were female and 46.95% male. The prevalence of G duodenalis resulted 12.17% by microscopy and by ELISA method the prevalence resulted 20.87%. Also about 44 samples are considered as equivocal by ELISA test. This high result of equivocal test to patients maybe were as result of the cross reaction between protozoa parasites. Depended of the methods that we have used the male were the most contaminated sex.
Conclusion In our country there were no data about the prevalence of this infection in all population. So it is the necessity of screening a large number of stool specimens for detection of G duodenalis and also the treatment of infected people as well as improving sanitation and supplying treated water will lower the infection rates.
