The risk assessment is a multi step procedure that comprise: data collection, exposure assessment, toxicity assessment and risk characterisation. Due to their low tolerance to pollutants the health risk is very high for children’s population. The goal of this study was to estimate risk to children’s health based on the content of heavy metals in soils of playgrounds in Sarajevo urban area where Cd, Pb, Cr, Ni, Cu, Zn, Co, Fe, Se and As were identified as potential hazardous agents in soils at playgrounds. Samples for the determination of heavy metals were prepared by microwave assisted acid digestion and determined by using an atomic absorption spectrophotometer. Furthermore, the potential health risk assessment calculated for a lifetime of exposure (ingestion, inhalation and dermal) based on USEPA model, was determined as the cumulative carcinogenic and non carcinogenic risk for children. The value of total hazard index (HI) is calculated for maximum, minimum and average concentration of heavy metals for children. Our preliminary results may contribute to more accurate health risk assesments of the soils, and may be included in projects planning children’s health risk assessments and adopting environmental legislation which has not been sufficiently regulated in Bosnia and Herzegovina so far.
