Primary focus of EU, concerning development of SMEs sector is an investment in innovation, which is recognized as the key element in making European businesses competitive and in contributing to job creation. Companies must compete through innovation, producing new and different goods using the most sophisticated production processes if they want to survive and to be competitive in EU market. The importance of innovation in the development of entrepreneurship in the European Union can be seen through European Union funds allocated for their entrepreneurship and innovation. Competitiveness and Innovation Framework Program (CIP) has small and medium sized enterprises as a main target and allocates 60% of the total budget for Entrepreneurship and Innovation Program.
Given the tendency of Croatia to join the European Union, this paper will explore the importance of processes that implement innovation in the development of competitive entrepreneurship in Croatian and the European Union small and medium enterprises. The thesis of this paper is that importance of innovation is more recognized in European Union than in Croatia which makes European Union enterprisees more competitive. When entering in European Union Croatian SMEs have to be prepared to compete in the common market if they want to survive which creates a need to isolate and improve the main indicators of competitiveness. The second thesis of the paper is that greater investment in innovation in Croatia will increase SMEs competitiveness which will be demonstrated on the example of European Union SMEs. With statistical methods the correlation between innovation and increasing competitiveness of small and medium enterprises will be proven.
