Agricultural and industrial soil in some places, such as places near roads, gas stations, construction sites and automobile repair workshops has potentially risk to be affected by contamination of petroleum hydrocarbons. To determine the composition and amount of hydrocarbons adsorbed on the soil, the first step is their desorption i.e. the extraction of contaminated samples.
For extraction of total petroleum hydrocarbons adsorbed on the soil were used 3 methods: extraction by Soxhlet, the ultrasonic extraction and extraction by mechanical shaking. The efficiency of these methods was tested on a series of model samples obtained by mixing a certain amount of diesel fuel with a dry non-contaminated soil. Enriching the soil samples was performed on six different concentration levels. Hexane was used as the extracting solvent.
Determination of extracted total petroleum hydrocarbons were performed on the gas chromatograph with the flame-ionization detector (GC-FID).
The assessment of the applicability of the selected solvent and extraction methods for testing of real soil samples contaminated by petroleum hydrocarbons was carried out based on the model samples.
The results showed that Soxhlet extraction method has the most efficiency in extraction of total petroleum hydrocarbons compared with other two methods.
