In order to achieve a high efficiency for water turbines, a comprehensive flow analysis needs to be done. One of the most important aspects is the inlet flow field of the turbine, just before the fluid reaches the runner blades, where boundary layer separation and vortex shedding must be minimized. The stay and guide vanes form a tandem configuration where, due to the interaction mechanism between the two profiles, the boundary layer can be controlled for maximizing of the blade loading.
This paper presents the numerical investigation of the steady, three-dimensional flow field trough the stay and guide vanes tandem cascade of a Francis turbine. By varying of the relative angular position between the stay and guide blades, the efficiency and the total loss of the configurations are calculated. Specialized software, employing the finite volume method, was used to solve the governing equations for turbulent flows and conclusions and insights are being made on the basis of the obtained results.
