Circular economy (CE) represents a multidisciplinary, regenerative and modern economic model, which is based on the circulation of materials, in which waste from one factory or one product is recycled to create a raw material (new resource) for another factory or another new product. The circular economy (CE) focuses on the economic and environmental dimensions of sustainability and sustainable development (SD). In this way, the circular economy (CE) becomes a regenerative economic, industrial and economic model and system, in which the environment is taken into account, i.e. the natural eco-system, saves natural resources, reduces the amount of waste for disposal, reduces the emission of various gases, reduces waste, etc.
For the efficient functioning of the circular economy (CE), two business models are used: the circular business model (CBM) and the circular economy business model (CEBM), and the analysis of their application in manufacturing companies is the goal of this paper. The CBM and CEBM models represent a way of doing business in which products, materials, energy and resources are kept in use as long as possible, during the life cycle of the product, while the creation of waste is reduced to the smallest possible extent. And the main goals of the CBM and CEBM models are to establish a resource-efficient economic and business system of material, energy, resource and production flows throughout the entire product life cycle. For the successful application of CBM and CEBM models, a large number of efficient and modern frameworks, models, methods, tools, etc. are available.
The transition to CBM and CEBM models has become a key component of sustainable development strategies in all industries. In this way, they represent one of the key postulates of the development of a new society, in which the treatment of waste as a raw material enables significant financial effects and the effects of protecting natural resources, i.e. the effects of preserving the eco-system. Despite their potential to reduce environmental impact and promote resource efficiency, the implementation of CBM and CEBM models still faces a wide range of problems and obstacles, from technological and organizational to informational and regulatory challenges. The accelerated development and application of digital technologies (DT), in recent years, opens up the possibility of solving these problems and obstacles by improving transparency, coordination and adaptability within circular systems.
In practice, manufacturing companies still face challenges in translating the concepts of CBM and CEBM models into their corporate strategies and business models (BM). Consequently, the market penetration and application of these models is limited in many industrial sectors. Hence, the implementation of CBM and CEBM models in manufacturing companies requires changes that go beyond technological or product innovation and involve overall value creation and redefining business success. Therefore, it is necessary to develop special forms of organizational capacities that are based on new innovative CBM and CEBM models in order to adapt existing business models (BM) and create new ones based on the circular economy (CE).
