Due to the extensive usage of siloxane compounds, their volatility and great affinity to apolar environments, siloxanes are considered as one of the most important impurities in biogas. They are undesired because of their potential for abrasive SiO2 formation as combustion product that can damage engines and appliances. Furthermore, some of these compounds present a health risk. The development of novel traceable methods for the analysis of total silicon content in biogas is of utmost importance for the industry to demonstrate compliance with quality requirements of biogas. Microwave plasma - atomic emission spectrometry is used for the quantification of total silicon after absorption and decomposition of siloxanes in biogas mixtures using acidic media. Concentrated nitric and sulphuric acids and their mixtures are used as absorption/digestion/concentration media. After dilution, the liquid phase is analysed using described instrumentation and silicon quantification is performed at various emission lines depending on the concentration level. The method validation is performed by studying the behaviour of pure siloxane compounds in different digestion media in terms of digestion efficiency and solutions stability.
