EYELID AND LACRIMAL SURGERY IN CHILDREN

1. Zoran Žikić, Klinika za očne bolesti, KBC Zvezdara, Beograd, Serbia

The most common congenital eyelid abnormality is ptosis. Ptosis may be associated with other disorders such as in Marcus Gunn or blepharophymosis syndrome. Other congenital eyelid problems, which are presented, include coloboma and epiblepharon. Acase of eyelid avulsion by dog bite, specific for this age group, is presented, along with applied technique of reconstruction.
Congenital nasolacrimal duct obstruction occurs in 2-5% of newborns. The spontaneous resolution of this condition exceeds 90% in the first 12 months of life, hence surgical treatment is deferred before this age. Treatment options include syringing, probing and insertion of a silicone stent, in general anaesthesia. A simultaneous endoscopic nasal inspection, and if indicated, inferior turbinate infracture, should be carried out. In cases of treatment failure or complete blockage of the nasolacrimal duct, a DCR is indicated. In the unlikely event of canalicular agenesis, the only available option is a conjunctival-DCR with insertion of a glass tube.
