Improvement of thermal stability and mechanical properties of an epoxy/amine system can be achieved by addition of organically modified montmorillonite (MMT). Depending on the nature of the organic ions intercalated in the interface, the modified MMT can catalyze curing reaction, or react with prepolymer or crosslinking agent. Epoxy hybrids with different montmorillonite were prepared using in-situ procedure. In the first step, montmorillonite was added to epoxy, and the mixing was performed in ultrasound bath at 45 °C. Then, crosslinking agent Jeffamine D-400 was added to the mixture. A series of epoxy/Jeffamine D-400 samples with different montmorillonite content (0, 3, 5 and 10 wt. %) were prepared. The curing of obtained modified systems was carried out by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), using dynamic regime at three different heating rates: 5, 10 and 20 °C/min. According to the obtained DSC data, it can be noticed that the temperature of maximum curing rate was decreased by increasing montmorillonite content, followed by the change of DSC curves shape. Based on obtained values for kinetic parameters, it is determined that MMT presence affects the mechanism and curing kinetics of epoxy/amine systems.
