USE A TWO STAGE ANAEROBIC DIGESTOR TO IMPROVE THE CONVENTIONAL MESOPHILIC ANAEROBIC DIGESTION PROCESS

The aim of this research was to analyze the effect of time in the digestion of sludge from a methanogenic stage of a two-stage mesophilic anaerobic sludge digestion operating in parallel with a conventional system, to improve the digestion process. The lab plant consisted of two treatment lines that were fed from an acyd digester of a two-stage anaerobic digester with 2.5 days and from a conventional mesophilic anaerobic digester, respectively. The results showed: i) The maximum reduction of volatile obtained in a conventional system, after 27 days, can be achieved in a two stage system, operating at 2.5 days in acid digester and 12 days in the methanogenic; ii) The yields obtained in reduction of volatile in a two stage system can be increased by 7% increasing the time in 5 days in the second stage and therefore a global time of 13 days; iii) A conservative design of the process in two phases of 2.5+12 days to get the same quality of sludge that a conventional system operating at 27 days, thereby reducing the total volume of digestion by 46%.
