Vortex induced vibrations on complex pipe structures

Vortex induced vibrations (VIV) due to sea currents on long pipelines and riser is a well known and documented problem. There is rather much less knowledge about more complex piping geometries that change in direction and may be partially shielded by structures or other pipes. Nowadays the engineers use formulas from known pipeline standards, to verify the design. These standards are made for risers and long pipelines and not complex geometries. The project will use coupled CFD / structural dynamic analysis to investigate the problem. The generated data will be used to compare with standards used in the industry today. The conclusion will consider if the standards are too conservative when applying them on shorter and more complex geometries.
