The issue of “creative” translation and interpretation between English and Serbian literate expressions on the example of lyrics on Byzantium by Ivan V. Lalic, translated and prepared by Charles Simic is the onset of the essay. Examples of the letters from the book “A view across the ocean: The correspondence of Ivan V. Lalic and Charles Simic 1969-1996” by Svetlana Seatovic Dimitrijevic have been depicted. Preparing this correspondence a private and authentic has been illustrated; a “surplus of meaning” i.e. the key for understanding the relation between the two poets, who built friendship in a “scarce time” and kept the presence of a mind. The work presents critical review of creational dialogue providing deeper communication between Serbian and American literature through letters of the two poets. The second part of the essay provides cultural and literary analysis of Simic’ critical interpretation of reconstructed Byzantium myth in the poetry of Lalic.
