1. Salwana Hassan

The growth of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) will stimulate economic growth of the country as in the case of Malaysia where the SMEs contribute 32% of the gross domestic product (GDP) and 56% of total employment in the country. 99.2% of businesses in Malaysia is categorised as SMEs and about 80% of them is micro enterprises. As a matter of fact the government is seriously looking into this matter that is developing the micro enterprises by allocating grants and supporting the businesses via various agencies, commercial banks and working closely with the NGOs. This is aimed at upgrading the micro enterprises status. The objective of this paper is therefore to look at the determinants of success for rural micro enterprises. Based on a survey done among 733 rural entrepreneurs in Malaysia, adequate capital is considered as the main factor to stay in business. Other success factors include self determination, skills and moral support from family, friends and government. The use of technology is not considered as a driving factor to succeed in business.
