First electronic transactions occurred in the late 1970s using technology such as Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) and Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT). The new era of the E-Commerce began after the introduction of the WWW and the first online stores in the mid 1990s. The term \"e-business\" for the first time was coined by IBM\'s marketing and Internet teams in 1996. Since then there are numerous attempts by researchers to define the term Electronic Business and to determine the scope of the corresponding academic field. In the present literature there is obvious disagreement among researchers regarding these topics. Some researchers tend to treat Electronic Business and Electronic Commerce as synonyms, other define E-Business broadly as utilization of ITC in the business processes and third tend to build a concept of “total” E-Business where not every usage of ITC and e-commerce should be treated as an E-Business but it is an essential prerequisite.
The purpose of this paper is to set a frame for defining E-Business as an academic field, describing its scope of research and distinguishing it from other related fields as Information Systems Technology Management and E-Commerce. This framework could find its application in creating degree programs and course curriculums in the field of Electronic Business.
