Despite permanent improvements in road safety, young driver accidents continue to be over-
represented in car crashes. The over-representation is mainly caused by the specific driver errors
and the young driver risk-taking behaviour.
This paper used the data collected from in-depth crash investigation to examine the causes
and contributing factors leading to young driver crashes. Analyses by level of experience were
undertaken to determine whether the incidence of specific young driver errors could account for
the substantial decline in crashes during time. Based on findings from the analyses, measures
that might reduce the incidence of young driver crashes are discussed.
