The sector of solid waste management has a significant contribution to the emission of greenhouse gases (GHG) into the atmosphere. There is a great uncertainty about the estimates of direct emissions, indirect emissions and possibilities to reduce climate change in this sector.
The existing waste management practices can effectively reduce GHG emissions from this sector. There is a wide range of developed, environmentally effective technologies available to reduce emissions and ensure public health, environmental protection and sustainable development.
Therefore, we need an optimal technique of municipal solid waste (MSW) management which would comprise all the stages - collection phase, appropriate treatment and disposal.
This paper analyses various MSW managing techniques and scenarios from the point of GHG emissions taking into account experiences of the countries in the European Union and several other countries with different levels of economic and social development.
A brief comparative analysis of the situation in this sector in various regions throughout the territory of the Republic of Serbia is also presented here.
Finally, certain conclusions regarding selection of optimum MSW management techniques in terms of GHG-emission reductions have been drawn.
