Due to the fact that children are in direct contact with surface soils, it has been recommended that children’s playgrounds should be given special consideration in this respect. Samples for the determination of heavy metals and metalloides were prepared by microwave assisted acid digestion and determined by using an atomic absorption spectrophotometer. Determined contents (mg kg-1) for Cd, Pb, Cr, Ni, Cu, Zn, Co, Fe, Se and As were in the ranges from: 0.25 to 2.18; 13.30 to 151.53; 7.14 to 40.51; 31.41 to 101.54; 15.37 to 80.21; 64.32 to 161.45; 2.25 to 10.75; 1.33 to 7.82; 0.47 to 2.7 and 1.88 to 4.83, respectively. It has been assessed that domestic coal combustion, coal-fired power stations, industrial processes and vehicles are the major contributors to the contemporary Sarajevo's heavy metals and metalloides, emissions. These results indicate the significant need for the development of pollution prevention and reduction strategies to reduce toxical compounds for children playgrounds. Consequently public children playgrounds in Sarajevo can be considered areas at high risk. Our preliminary results suggest concerns about potential adverse effects, which strengthens the case for a more precautionary approach to uncontrolled presence of heavy metals in Sarajevo’s playground soils.
