Bi-metallic extrusion is a relatively new metal forming operation which enables manufacturing of the engineering components composed of two different materials. This makes it possible to create optimal combination of desired properties which are incorporated into the final component. For instance, magnetic properties of steel can be combined with anti-corrosive characteristics of aluminum or with electric conduction of copper, etc.
Most frequently applied bi-metallic models are forward and backward extrusion. One of the main challenges of this process is the difference in mechanical properties of both materials which causes different flow patterns during deformation. This can partly be solved by proper design of main process parameters and billet shape and geometry.
Current paper elaborates the process of forward bi-metallic extrusion. Initial billet consists of inner Cu-core and outer Al-ring. Experimental investigation was focused on two important issues: a) how does the shape and geometry of the billet influence the load – stroke characteristics and b) analysis of material flow during deformation. Experimental load was compared with analyticaly obtained load. For the experimental investigation special tooling has been designed and made. Investigation has been performed in the Laboratory for Metal Forming at FTN, University of Novi Sad.
