LEGISLATION AND STANDARDISATION RELATED TO WHOLE BODY VIBRATION

1. Boban Cvetanović, Visoka tehnička škola Niš, Serbia

Whole-body vibration is caused by machines or vehicles that transmit vibration through the operator’s feet, buttocks and back into his or her body. Employees who are regularly exposed to whole-body vibration may suffer from lower back pain as well as disorders of the sensory functions or finemotor co-ordination. The most common health effect reported due to WBV is that of back disorder, which has been broadly classified as “lumbar syndrome”.
To prevent damage to the health of workers against vibration must, among other things, provide for certain permissible exposure values, as well as preventive measures to reduce or completely remove the threat of action due to vibration. Therefore, it is necessary to have laws, regulations and standards that will govern the measurement and evaluation of human exposure to whole-body vibration and set minimum health and safety requirements regarding the exposure of workers to the risks due to vibration.
The first guidance for the evaluation of human exposure to WBV was published in 1974 as International Standard ISO 2631. After several amendments this was republished in 1985 under a new title. These early standards possessed similar characteristics.
Currently in use in the world over a hundred rules, norms and standards related to whole body vibration. Probably the most important and certainly the most commonly used European Directive 2002/44/EC i ISO 2631-1(1997). The European Directive issued in 2002 served to establish the methods for WBV monitoring and setting action and limit values for the control of occupational vibration across Europe.
