Living H2O

1. Mae-Wan Ho

Living H2O Living H2O is the liquid crystalline water on interfaces that makes life possible, providing the perfect medium, message, and means for life; and it has the colours of a dancing rainbow. Cells are packed with cytoskeletal and membrane surfaces that confine proteins to nanometre volumes; and confinement can potentially change the fundamental properties of proteins and associated liquid crystalline water. Static in vitro systems of bulk water on macroscopic interfaces are illuminating, but cannot compare directly with the incredibly dynamic situation inside the living cell. Water in bulk is demonstrably different from that under different confined conditions in a variety of nanospaces more true to the intracellular and extracellular milieu in life. Nevertheless, some common threads run through all the systems. The first is the tendency of liquid water to exist in two states, one adopting the ice-like crystalline tetrahedral hydrogen bonded structure wherever and whenever possible, even within nanospaces - this being a consequence of quantum coherent domains in water predicted by quantum electrodynamics field theory - and the ease with which alternative bonding structures are adopted based on collective constraints, so that collective dynamics dominate at sufficient small dimensions (nanometres). The second common thread is that water is almost infinitely flexible, which is why it has a dazzling array of crystalline and quasicrystalline structures, as seen within single walled carbon nanotubes (and in snowflakes, each of which is unique). Water’s own ability to form a variety of crystalline and quasicrystalline structures is most probably the reason it can help colloid crystals and quasicrystals self-assemble for many applications in nanoscale electronics. Self-assembly facilitated by water is the key to how cells (and organisms) are exquisitely structured down to the molecular level such that entire enzyme pathways are associated in metabolons. Molecules - enzymes and their substrates, as well as enzymes interacting with common substrates and products - are attracted by common electromagnetic frequencies to surfaces of coherent domains where they are provided with activation energy from collective excitations of the coherent water domains. Water’s prodigious flexibility makes it the perfect medium for the ‘quantum jazz’ that enables ultimately each molecular to intercommunicate with every other in a light, music and dance show that spans 20 orders of magnitude in space-time. Water enables all performers to express their full degrees of freedom, while providing at all times, the ultra-sensitive intercommunication channels that may trigger an abrupt change of phase at the global level. In that way, water is not only the medium, but also both message and messenger of life. This brings me to the third common thread: water is the supreme catalyst, the super-facilitator of chemical reactions, both as a redox pile in the form of liquid crystalline coherent water that also offers activation energy and specific attraction between enzyme and substrate, and as the result of dynamic switching between two states of water. Finally, water provides the very means of life as the substrate for reduction/oxidation reactions, the fuel and dynamo that turns inanimate material into the living biosphere. Oxidation/reduction, the basis of energy metabolism in living organisms, is electrons moving between molecules, the electric current that creates and animates life. The electrons come ultimately from splitting water with energy trapped from sunlight; and that is possible only because coherent liquid crystalline water on interfaces is already excited to nearly ionisation level (ready to be split). In the process, electrons come loose with associated protons, and most importantly, oxygen is released to support the evolution of multicellular aerobic organisms, thereby greatly increasing the scope of the biosphere up to and including the human species.
