Numerical simulation and parametric study of forced convective evaporation process in horizontal tubes of shell and tube evaporators

Simulation of evaporation process in horizontal tubes of shell and tube evaporators is presented in this research. Forced convective evaporation inside a tube is investigated numerically by the volume of fluid (VOF) method. This model can predict, average heat transfer coefficient of forced convective evaporation and two phase flow regime inside the tube. The effect of geometric parameters on heat transfer coefficient and flow regime is considered by parametric study method. Based on the results, heat transfer coefficient increases by increase in the amount of inlet velocity and Reynolds number. Moreover decrease in tube diameter and the temperature difference between the wall and saturated water temperature will lead to a higher heat transfer coefficient. Finally, numerical solution is compared with some empirical solution , results were compared with experimental calculation showing relatively good agreements. by knowledge of heat transfer coefficient and parametric behavior from this research, designers can reduce cost and avoid the drastic results due to under design or overdesign of shell and tube evaporators and other two phase equipments.
