COLOR GAMUT DIFFERENCE ASSESMENT IN DEPENDACE OF RENDERING INTENT IN OFFSET PRINTING

In color management systems the RGB to CMYK color transformation is defined by the settings of color profile. Besides the selected color profile, rendering intents, defined according to end-use application, significantly influence above mentioned transformation. CMYK color spaces are usually chosen in accordance with printing substrate and printing technique where standardized color spaces defined by ISO, GRACol, SWOP or Fogra are widely used. The quantitative color differences between those color spaces may not be classified as significant, but subjective visual comparisons may not always correspond to quantitative findings. Thus, this research attempts to define color gamut differences of the reproduced images, using the most recommendable CMYK color spaces and different color rendering intents. The goal of this study is to define the optimal color transformation parameters to be used with respect to offset printing (in accordance with ISO 12647-2:2013). The assessment was done using three images that differed by their tonality – in each one of them next colors are perceived as dominant: saturated colors, pastel colors and skin tones. The conversion from RGB to CMYK color space was done using perceptual and colorimetric (relative and absolute) rendering intents. The findings pointed out the significance of standardized color spaces usage in color management systems and created a starting point to establish a set of recommendations for their practical application.
