Background: Hepatitis C virus (HCV) is one of the major causes of chronic hepatitis. It is important to know the pre therapy HCV RNA values in the decision of the HCV related chronic hepatitis therapy.
Aim: To compare by HCV genotypes the pre therapy HCV RNA values among patients with chronic hepatitis C .
Methods. The study was carried out at the University Hospital Centre “Mother Teresa” in Tirana, Albania from 2006 until 2015. All patient who have been identify with HCV and met the criteria for treatment with antiretroviral have been included in the study. The data on the genotype of HCV and pre therapy value of HCV RNA (genomes /ml) was collected for each of the participant. The ANOVA technique was used to identify if there is any difference on HCV RNA value by main HCV genotypes.
Results: In total, 265 patients have been included in the study. The most prevalent genotype is type 1b with 55 % of cases, followed genotype 2a/2c with 18.5 % and genotype 2 with 13.2 %. The mean HCV RNA value for genotypes 1b is 3.2 x 108 genomes/ml ±3.7x109, for genotypes 2a/2c is 5.8 x106 genomes/ml ±1.7 x107 and for genotype 2 6.5x106 genomes/ml ±1.08x107 These means value are not significantly different by HCV genotypes (p>0.05).
Conclusion: The pre therapy HCV RNA value is not depended by the HCV genotypes in patients with chronic hepatitis C.
