The aim of this research was to analyze the effect of influent suspended solids and surface overflow rate, related to flow variations in urban sewer networks with little slope, on the performance of primary sedimentation of wastewater. A semi-technical scale-settling vessel, fed by pumping and located off the pre-treatment of a wastewater treatment plant, was used. The results showed: i) An increase in the concentration of pollutants in the early hours of the day, corresponding to the sedimented pollution load in sewage system during night time hours with a lower rate of contribution, was observed; ii) The yields obtained in reduction of suspension and organic solids with two different hydraulic loads experimented were negative in the early hours of the day; iii) The yields obtained in reduction of suspended solids, biochemical oxygen demand, and chemical oxygen demand, can be increased by 3%, 4% and 6%, just by decreasing the surface overflow rate 0,4 m3/m2h.
