Background. The patients with rheumatic pathology has a higher sensitivity toward the climate conditions compared with the rest of the population. Findings of several studies shows that the climate changes play a very significant role in relieving or aggravation of rheumatic pain among 75 to 90% of patients with rheumatic pathology.
Objective. To assess the impact of weather conditions on pain of patients with rheumatic pain in Albanian background.
Methods. Seventy-eight patients (46 with rheumatoid arthritis and 32 with osteoarthritis) from the district of Durres were included in a prospective study. Patients filled out forms for the presence and degree of pain based on a visual analog scale from 0-100 mm every day for a period of 6 months. The data on temperature and barometric pressure were collected from the local metrological station for the same time. The relationship between temperature, barometric pressure and pain was estimated through using the correlations technique in SPPS. Only a p < 0.01 is considered significant.
Results. Temperature and barometric pressure decrease is associated significantly with the increase of the value of VAS (increase of pain) (r = -0345; r = -0. 137 p <0.01) in patient with arthritis, while in patients with osteoarthritis, only temperature decrease is associated with increase of VAS ( increase of pain ) (r = -0328, p <0.01).
Conclusions. These results support the theory that climatic conditions (temperature and barometric pressure) affecting the nature rheumatic pain. This interpretation can be used in choose of treatment methods (pharmacological and non-pharmacological) in patients with rheumatoid pathology.
